Pre-Diwali Pest Control Checklist for Pune Homes

The best time to do pest control before Diwali is after you've decluttered but before your final round of cleaning and decorating, ideally one to two weeks ahead of the festival. Diwali cleaning already means emptying cupboards, pulling out furniture, and opening up the loft, which exposes exactly the places where cockroaches, lizards, rats, and termites hide. Treating the house at that stage reaches spots that stay hidden the rest of the year, and gives the treatment time to work before guests arrive.

Why pests are worse right before Diwali in Pune

Diwali comes right after the monsoon. Months of rain and humidity push cockroaches up from drains, keep wooden frames damp enough for termites, and drive rats indoors looking for dry shelter. Then the festival itself adds more food to the house than any other time of year: sweets, dry fruits, faral, and bulk groceries for guests. A house that had a small, unnoticed pest problem in September can have a visible one by the time Diwali arrives.

The right order: declutter, treat, then clean and decorate

  • Declutter first. Clear out old newspapers, cardboard boxes, and unused items from lofts and under beds. Cardboard and paper are both food and shelter for cockroaches and termites, and removing them takes away hiding spots before treatment.
  • Get the treatment done next, while cupboards are empty and furniture is already pulled away from walls. Treatment reaches cracks, corners, and the backs of cabinets that are normally blocked.
  • Do your final cleaning and decorating after the treatment, and avoid scrubbing or wiping the specific cracks and corners that were treated. Treatments placed in those spots need to stay undisturbed to keep working.

Room-by-room checklist

Kitchen: check under the sink, behind the refrigerator, around the gas pipeline, and inside the hinges and back corners of cabinets. Look for droppings that resemble ground coffee or black pepper, and egg cases in corners. Move sweets, dry fruits, and flour into airtight containers rather than leaving them in their original boxes or packets.

Loft and storage areas: these are opened once a year for Diwali, which makes them a common home for cockroaches, rats, and termites. Look for chewed cardboard, shredded paper, droppings, and mud tubes on walls or wooden shelves. Shift what you keep up there from cardboard boxes to plastic containers with lids where you can.

Wooden doors, windows, and furniture: tap frames and the backs of wardrobes with a knuckle. Wood that sounds hollow, crumbles under light pressure, or has thin mud tunnels running along it points to termites. Doors that suddenly stick for no clear reason are also worth checking.

Bedrooms and guest rooms: if relatives will be staying over, check mattress seams, bed frame joints, and the edges of headboards for small rust-coloured spots or pale shed skins, both signs of bed bugs. It's far easier to deal with them before guests arrive than after.

Balcony and outdoor areas: empty water from plant saucers, old buckets, and anything that collected rain. Standing water is where mosquitoes breed, and it's easy to miss when you're focused on cleaning indoors.

Check your decoration lights before plugging them in

Diwali lights, lanterns, and extension boards usually sit in a box for eleven months. Before you plug them in, look over the wires for chew marks and check the box for droppings. Rats chew through wire insulation, and a damaged serial light is a genuine safety risk, not just a pest problem. Throw out any string with exposed or bitten wires instead of taping it.

Is pest control safe with sweets and food in the house?

Yes, as long as food is stored properly during the visit. Keep sweets, dry fruits, and open groceries in closed containers or in the fridge while the treatment is being done, and keep utensils covered or put away. Best Pest Care uses herbal, plant-based formulations that are safe for families and pets and don't leave a strong chemical smell, which matters when the house is about to fill up with guests.

How early should you book?

One to two weeks before Diwali is the sweet spot. It's late enough that your decluttering is done, and early enough that the treatment has time to take effect before the festival. The weeks leading up to Diwali are a busy time for pest control across Pune and PCMC, so booking early also makes it more likely you get the date and time slot you want.

Signs you need professional treatment, not just cleaning

  • You see cockroaches during the day. They normally hide in daylight, so daytime sightings usually mean a large population behind the walls.
  • You find droppings in more than one room.
  • There are mud tubes on walls or wood that sounds hollow when tapped.
  • You hear scratching in the false ceiling or loft at night.
  • Lizards keep returning even after a thorough clean, which often means there's a steady insect population for them to feed on.

If any of these sound familiar, a free inspection before Diwali will tell you exactly what you're dealing with and what it will cost to treat, before you commit to anything.
